OFDT study reveals environmental impact of synthetic drug production
A new study by the French Observatory of Drugs and Addiction Tendencies (OFDT) highlights the significant environmental damage caused by the clandestine production of synthetic drugs. The report indicates that the manufacturing of these substances generates between 5 and 30 times their own volume in chemical waste.
Specific examples include the production of amphetamines, which results in 20 to 30 kg of chemical waste per kilogram produced, and MDMA, which can generate up to 58 kg of waste per kilogram according to European data. These illegal laboratories often discard chemical drums containing solvents and acids in forests, ditches, and rural areas, leading to the long-term contamination of soil and groundwater.
