Altea fireworks accident injures 27 people

During the 40th anniversary celebration of the Castell de l’Olla in Altea, Alicante, a pyrotechnic accident resulted in approximately 27 injuries. The incident occurred during a traditional fireworks display held over the sea.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a firework casing deviated from its intended trajectory, possibly due to a faulty anchorage of a mortar on a floating platform. Instead of exploding over the water, the casing struck the beach where large crowds were gathered.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene. Of the injured, 14 were initially taken to the Hospital IMED Levante, with 11 subsequently transferred to the Burn Unit at the General University Hospital of Alicante for specialized care. Another 13 individuals were treated at the Altea Health Centre and later discharged. Authorities are conducting a full investigation to confirm the exact cause of the malfunction.
