Officer-involved shootings reported in South Carolina and North Carolina

In South Carolina, a deputy was wounded during an encounter with 42-year-old Walter Jason Smith in Greenville County. Following an unrelated traffic stop on September 4, Smith approached a deputy with a firearm. Body camera footage shows Smith taunting deputies before fleeing on foot and opening fire. During the exchange, a deputy was struck in the shoulder, and Smith was shot in the leg. Smith faces charges including attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm. An internal investigation determined the deputy's actions were justified.

In North Carolina, two Guilford County Sheriff’s Office deputies sustained non-life-threatening injuries during a response to a domestic disturbance in Liberty on October 19. The incident resulted in the death of a suspect at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the ongoing inquiry into the shooting.
