Offshore wind farms enter Germany's reserve power market

Offshore wind farm operators in Germany are increasingly entering the reserve power market to balance fluctuations in electricity generation and consumption. While traditionally dominated by gas plants, pumped storage, and batteries, wind farms are now seeking qualification to provide grid stability.

Transmission system operators 50Hertz and Tennet report rising interest from offshore operators. Vattenfall has begun marketing reserve energy from the Veja Mate wind farm, located near Borkum, which consists of 67 turbines. Additionally, the utility group Trianel has started marketing the Borkum I wind farm for the reserve energy market.

Operators can generate revenue by providing negative reserve capacity, which involves reducing power feed-in on demand. This can be more profitable than selling electricity at low market prices. The Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy Systems (IEE) notes that these qualifications indicate offshore wind farms are being increasingly utilized as flexibility options for the grid.
