Ofu Island is a remote tropical destination in American Samoa

Ofu Island, located in American Samoa, is a remote tropical destination within the only U.S. National Park situated south of the equator. Positioned in the South Pacific, the island is approximately 5,000 miles from the United States mainland.

The land is the ancestral home of the Samoan people, who maintain ownership of the territory. In 1988, the National Park Service established a 50-year lease for the area upon the creation of the national park. Portions of the island located outside the national park boundaries remain under the collective ownership of the indigenous inhabitants.

Due to its isolation, Ofu Island is considered a destination for travelers seeking to go off the beaten path.
