Ogbomoso school kidnapping sparks security debate in Nigeria

On 10 July 2026, pupils and teachers from the Orire school in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, were rescued after being abducted by armed men. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hailed the operation, saying security forces successfully rescued the victims.

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, later defended President Tinubu at a US‑Nigeria Faith Heroes Award event, arguing that a commander‑in‑chief need only issue orders to security agencies. Adeboye urged a ninety‑day ultimatum for the security chiefs to eliminate terrorists or resign and called for action against wealthy individuals he said sponsor terrorism, including businessmen and politicians.

The incident has intensified public discussion over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, the responsibility of political leaders, and the role of affluent actors in supporting violent groups.
