Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson wins historic fencing gold
Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson, a 16-year-old fencer, won Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s Under-23 epee event at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships held in Lagos. After switching allegiance from England to represent Nigeria, Esiovwa-Thompson secured the victory by defeating Asian champion Lokesh Verma of India with a score of 15-5 in the final.
His path to the gold included defeating South Africa’s Mathobela in the round of 16 and overcoming several Indian opponents in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori congratulated the athlete, describing the achievement as a historic feat that brings pride to both the state and the nation.
