Ogoni stakeholders demand jobs and transparency ahead of oil resumption

The proposed resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland, following a suspension of more than three decades, has prompted demands for greater economic inclusion and transparency from local stakeholders. The Ogoni Youth Federation (OYF) has called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to provide 500 job opportunities for local youth, arguing that the 40 slots currently allocated are inadequate.

Simultaneously, leadership from the four local government areas comprising the Ogoni region—Khana, Gokana, Tai, and Eleme—have expressed concerns regarding the transparency of the process. Represented by the umbrella body KAGOTE, local leaders warned that alleged oil-related activities occurring without adequate consultation could undermine the credibility of the Ogoni Dialogue Committee (ODC).

The federal government, under President Bola Tinubu, has placed the coordination of the dialogue process under the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. While local leaders have acknowledged the administration's commitment to resolving the ‘Ogoni question,’ they emphasize that any resumption must be anchored on environmental justice, equitable benefit-sharing, and the protection of the rights of the Ogoni people.
