OGS utilizes drones to monitor gold mining in Brokopondo
The Gold Sector Regulation Commission (OGS) has implemented drone technology to enhance monitoring and mapping of small-scale gold mining operations in the Brokopondo district. During field operations conducted in September and October, drones were utilized to identify mining locations that are difficult to see from the ground, map forest paths, and accurately determine the extent of investigated areas.
One operation took place around the Afobakadam area on September 23, while a second occurred in Peling Bergi near Kwakoegron on October 1. During the Peling Bergi visit, an entrepreneur noted that activities had been suspended for several days; however, OGS officials proceeded with the assessment to reinforce compliance with existing regulations.
OGS General Manager Wilson Balansi stated that the use of drones is part of a broader modernization effort. This technological integration is supported by the EMSAGS project (Improving Environmental Management in the Small-scale Gold Mining Sector), which provided drones and equipment to assist in the registration and oversight of small-scale miners.
