Ogun disability groups urge implementation of 2017 law

Disability rights advocacy groups in Ogun State are calling on Governor Dapo Abiodun to fully implement the state’s Disability Law, which was signed into law nearly nine years ago.

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and the Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria (SCIAN) held a joint press briefing in Abeokuta to demand action. They noted that while former Governor Ibikunle Amosun signed the law on December 27, 2017, it has not been fully operationalized. The groups emphasized that the law must move beyond being ‘a law on paper’ to become ‘a law in action’ by establishing functioning institutions, enforceable protections, and accessible public systems.

Advocates expressed concern that the lack of implementation affects various sectors, including healthcare, education, transport, employment, and political participation. They urged the Governor to provide the necessary political direction to conclude the implementation process before his term ends in eight months. The groups also stated that discussions regarding potential amendments to the law should not be used as a reason to indefinitely delay the enforcement of the existing legislation.
