Ogun State court sentences 14 residents to jail for illegal waste dumping

On Friday, the Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Ogun State sentenced fourteen residents to 14 days in the correctional centre, with the option of paying a N10,000 fine each, after they pleaded guilty to unlawful dumping of refuse on public roads and in drainages on August 6.

Prosecutor Inspector Evelyn Motim said the dumping produced offensive odour, attracted disease‑spreading flies such as those that can carry cholera, and increased the risk of flooding and property damage. The actions violated Section 34(1) of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority Law 2020 and relevant provisions of the Ogun State Public Health Law 2020, and were carried out across several neighbourhoods including Idi‑Aba, Ago‑Oko, Abiola Way, Sapon, Isale‑Igbein, Oke‑Ijeun, Olokuta, Imo, Oke‑Itokun, Ijaiye, Obafemi, Garage, Elite and Grammar School.
