Ogun State issues flood alert for upcoming rainy season

The Ogun State Government has issued a flood alert ahead of the second phase of the 2026 rainy season, which is expected to begin in September. The warning follows a forecast from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) predicting intense rainfall, averaging approximately 360mm during the month.

Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya warned that flooding could be triggered by prolonged rainfall, tidal fluctuations, and controlled water releases from the Oyan Dam. Vulnerable areas identified include Isheri, Arepo, Magboro, Akute, Warewa, and parts of Abeokuta. Coastal communities such as Makun-Omi, Iwopin, and Tungeji Island are also at risk, as are areas along the floodplains of the Ilo and Iju Rivers.

Residents in high-risk zones have been advised to relocate to safer locations. Additionally, fish farmers operating in floodplains, specifically in Eriwe, Yemule, Ilase, and Ayegbami, have been urged to harvest their stocks promptly to prevent losses.
