O’Hare Flyer proposes 15-minute express rail to Chicago

A private group has proposed the ‘O’Hare Flyer,’ an express rail service designed to connect O’Hare International Airport to downtown Chicago in approximately 15 minutes. The project, estimated to cost $2.25 billion, aims to utilize battery-electric trains traveling at average speeds of 130 kilometers per hour (80 mph).

Unlike the existing CTA Blue Line, the proposed service would operate without intermediate stops, running from a station near the Old Post Office to Terminal 2 at the airport. The developers intend to use existing freight rail corridors owned by CSX, Canadian National, and Union Pacific to minimize new construction. The group has reportedly reached an agreement with CSX and is in ongoing discussions with Canadian National.

Project leaders, including CEO Dave Lundy, stated that the initiative is seeking private equity and debt capital rather than government subsidies. While the plan offers a faster and potentially cheaper alternative to rideshares, questions regarding security, public safety, and regulatory approvals remain. If successful, construction could begin as early as 2027, with operations potentially starting within five years.
