O’Hare Flyer rail proposal sparks debate among western suburbs
Residents from several western suburbs gathered in Forest Park to demand more information regarding the proposed O’Hare Flyer, a privately financed express rail service. The project aims to connect downtown Chicago with O’Hare International Airport.
The meeting highlighted significant tension between project proponents and local community members. Opponents, including Forest Park residents, expressed concerns regarding potential disruptions to neighborhoods, specifically citing the impact of trains running as frequently as every 7.5 minutes. Forest Park Commissioner Maria Maxham noted that the community requires more concrete data regarding the project’s effects on traffic, property values, and the regional economy.
Dave Lundy, CEO and co-founder of the O’Hare Flyer, defended the proposal, characterizing it as an economic catalyst that could create thousands of jobs and attract corporate headquarters and conventions to Chicago. Lundy suggested that much of the current resistance is fueled by misinformation and emphasized the project’s potential to improve regional infrastructure.
