Ohasama Study approaches 40th anniversary of cardiovascular research

The Ohasama Study, a long-term community-based cardiovascular research project, is approaching its 40th anniversary in 2026. Launched in 1986 in Ohasama, Iwate Prefecture, by Professor Yutaka Imai of Tohoku University, the study was designed to address high rates of hypertension and stroke in the region.

The research has played a critical role in establishing the scientific basis for home blood pressure monitoring. Findings from the study demonstrated that home readings are stronger predictors of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease risks than in-clinic measurements. This evidence contributed to the international adoption of the 135/85 mmHg threshold for diagnosing hypertension.

OMRON Healthcare has supported the study since its inception by providing blood pressure monitors. Currently led by Professor Takayoshi Ohkubo of Teikyo University, the research continues to explore diverse factors such as salt-potassium balance, kidney function, and cognitive function to advance preventive medicine and digital health.
