Marcelo Díaz announces retirement from professional football

Marcelo Díaz, captain of Universidad de Chile, has officially announced his retirement from professional football following the 2026 season. The 39-year-old midfielder cited physical limitations, specifically stating, “the knees are telling me enough,” as the primary reason for his decision.

Díaz expressed a desire to retire on his own terms rather than being forced out by injury or lack of selection. He noted, “I don't want to end up on my knees... I don't want football to end for me.”

A farewell match titled “De la galería a la gloria” is scheduled for Tuesday, December 8, at the Estadio Nacional. The event is expected to feature prominent figures from his career, including Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aránguiz. Following his playing career, Díaz has indicated that Universidad de Chile has offered him a new role within the institution.
