Ohio advances fracking plans in Egypt Valley Wildlife Area amid brief public comment window
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) opened a two‑week public comment period on August 3, 2026 to review nine oil and gas administrative rules that will remain in effect for five years unless changed. Activists argue the short notice and limited publicity hinder meaningful public input.
On June 29, 2026 the Ohio Oil and Gas Land Management Commission approved bids to allow fracking on 13,000 acres of the Egypt Valley Wildlife Area, a former strip‑mined region now home to restored grasslands, wildlife and migratory birds. Conservation group Save Ohio Parks and other locals protest the plan, citing risks of air and water contamination from fracking accidents, which have occurred nearly 1,900 times in Ohio between 2015 and 2025.
