Ohio cannabis sales surpass $1.5 billion since market launch
Since the launch of recreational marijuana sales in 2024, Ohio’s adult-use cannabis market has surpassed $1.5 billion in total sales. According to data from the state Department of Commerce, these sales have generated over $55 million in excise tax revenue for host communities. While the statewide average price per gram has decreased from $9.40 at launch to approximately $6.54, Ohio remains significantly more expensive than neighboring states.
Data from the WeedBuddy Cannabis Price Index indicates that the median cost for an ounce of marijuana in Ohio is $147.35, compared to $99 in Michigan, $120 in Arizona, and $110 in Colorado. Additionally, Ohio Senate Bill 56 has criminalized the transport of legal marijuana from other states into Ohio, applying the same penalties as pre-legalization prohibition for unverified cannabis.
Despite the market's growth, local adoption varies. While there are currently 223 dispensaries in the state, Ohio State University’s Drug Enforcement and Policy Center reports that 137 jurisdictions have active moratoriums on adult-use dispensaries, affecting roughly 14% of the state's population.
