Ohio Democratic Candidates Shift Stance on Transgender Issues Ahead of Election

Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Dr. Amy Acton and long‑time U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur have softened their public positions on transgender issues as Ohio’s November elections approach. Acton told a newspaper in June that she “doesn’t support boys playing in girls’ sports,” while Kaptur voted in May for a Republican‑backed bill requiring schools to notify parents of a child’s request to change gender, pronouns or preferred name.

Both moves were criticized in op‑eds published by the LGBTQ‑focused Buckeye Flame. Editor Ken Schneck said, “If you’re going to try to get a statewide electorate, you’re going to have to make some compromises… but that comes at a cost at the hands of LGBTQ voters.” The Ohio Democratic Party’s Progressive Caucus issued, then deleted, a statement condemning Acton’s comment, and the party’s Pride Caucus posted that “Trans girls are girls.” Trans activist NV Gay warned that Acton’s remarks were “extremely damaging” to trans youth.

Republican opponents have seized on the controversy, accusing the Democrats of abandoning “common‑sense” positions on women’s sports. The internal party dispute highlights the pressure on Ohio Democrats to balance broader electoral concerns with LGBTQ voter expectations.
