Ohio expands truck parking infrastructure to address shortages

Ohio is actively expanding its truck parking infrastructure to address critical capacity shortages. Following a directive from Governor Mike DeWine in 2024, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) was tasked with creating 500 new truck parking spaces by the end of 2026.

Addressing the shortage is essential for driver safety and regulatory compliance. Currently, many drivers are forced to park in unsafe or illegal locations, such as freeway ramps, because they cannot find legal parking within their mandated hours of service (HOS) limits. Improving parking availability is expected to enhance fleet efficiency and reduce out-of-route miles driven by truckers searching for safe rest areas.
