Ohio lawmakers debate tax breaks and impact of data centers

Ohio lawmakers and political candidates are debating the economic and social impact of the state’s rapidly expanding data center industry. Legislative efforts are underway to reduce tax breaks for these facilities, potentially shifting infrastructure costs back to the companies themselves. This issue has become a central theme in state political campaigns, with Senator Sherrod Brown targeting Jon Husted for his perceived alliance with the industry.

In the gubernatorial race, candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has proposed an ‘Ohioans-First’ policy. His plan stipulates that new data centers would only be approved if they provide direct benefits to local residents, such as zero-cost electricity for homeowners in designated benefit zones, full property tax payments instead of abatements, and strict adherence to air, water, and farmland protection standards.

Public and corporate responses are shifting as well; Microsoft has announced it will cease using nondisclosure agreements and seeking tax abatements in Ohio, signaling increased sensitivity to local political pressure regarding the industry’s footprint on the power grid and community resources.
