Ohio officials rescue 16 children held for years in squalid home

Law enforcement in Vinton County, Ohio, conducted a raid on a rural house and rescued 16 minors who had been confined for an estimated four years in a cramped three‑by‑three‑metre room filled with human waste. The children, ages ranging from 18 months to 18 years, were found in extremely unsanitary conditions; some were hospitalized, and one was in critical condition.

Four adults – Gary Siders Jr., Gary Siders Sr., Christina Siders and Elizabeth Siders – were arrested and charged with child endangerment. Each was released on $300,000 cash bail and ordered not to contact the victims. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson and Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain described the scene as “worse than conditions for farm animals” and expressed shock at the level of neglect.

The case is being investigated by the Ohio State Criminal Investigation Office in coordination with the county sheriff’s office.
