Ohio Officer Jamie Patterson Convicted for Allowing Whipping of Handcuffed Teen

Middletown Police Officer Jamie Patterson was found guilty on July 30 of two counts of dereliction of duty after a bench trial. Body‑camera footage showed her arriving at a Middletown, Ohio home on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3 in response to domestic‑violence calls involving a 15‑year‑old who had threatened his father with a knife. After handcuffing the teenager, Patterson encouraged the boy’s grandfather to strike him with a leather belt, telling the teen, “Stand up, turn around… think you’re a big boy, huh?” and asking the grandmother about “corporal punishment.” The court concluded that she failed to protect the restrained youth and effectively sanctioned the beating. Patterson resigned from the police force and faces sentencing. The case highlights police misconduct and the legal limits of officer authority in juvenile custody situations.
