Ohio pushes forward with credit‑card deposit ban for online sports betting

The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) has released a draft amendment that would prohibit the use of credit cards to fund online sports‑betting accounts. Under the proposal, sportsbooks could only accept approved methods such as promotional credits, player winnings, ACH bank transfers, wire transfers, account corrections, or other payment options cleared by the OCCC executive director.

The public comment period is open until May 15, after which the commission will hold a hearing and forward the rule to the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review for further approval. If the amendment is adopted, it could take effect in the summer and would place Ohio among at least nine other U.S. states that have already banned credit‑card deposits for sports wagering.

The move aligns with a broader industry shift, as major operators including Caesars Digital, DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM have already stopped accepting credit‑card deposits, citing responsible‑gaming concerns and higher processing fees. The proposed rule does not affect debit‑card usage.
