Ohio reduces graduation credentials to improve workforce readiness

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce has reduced the number of career credentials that qualify high school students for graduation from 164 to 70. This decision, made at the direction of the state legislature, aims to address concerns that students were using weak credentials as a “shortcut” to earn diplomas without gaining marketable skills.

By cutting the list, the state is removing credentials in sectors such as retail sales and government emergency management, which saw high enrollment despite low employer demand. In one instance, approximately 9,000 students earned credentials applicable to only three specific jobs.

Steve Dackin, director of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, stated the move is a “game changer” for workforce readiness, noting the importance of ensuring students who do not attend college have viable paths to competitive salaries.
