Ohio Republicans propose 90-day gas tax suspension
Ohio Republican legislative leaders announced plans to return to Columbus next week to attempt a 90-day suspension of the state’s gas tax in response to historic spikes in fuel prices. The proposal, championed by gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, suggests using state reserve funds to cover the road and bridge maintenance budgets typically supported by gas tax revenue.
House Speaker Matt Huffman and Senate President Rob McColley indicated a vote is scheduled for next Wednesday. However, for the tax cut to take effect before the November election, Republicans will require support from Democrats due to legislative rules regarding the immediate implementation of new laws. Without bipartisan support, any relief would not take effect until late December.
House Minority Leader Dani Isaacsohn characterized the move as a ‘political ploy’ and stated that Democrats would only consider relief measures that divert the $600 million currently allocated for a new Cleveland Browns stadium. Huffman dismissed this counter-proposal during a Wednesday announcement.
