Ohio Secretary of State race focuses on voting laws

The upcoming election for Ohio Secretary of State features a contest between Republican Robert Sprague and Democrat Allison Russo. The winner will oversee the state’s election administration, including vote counts and referendums, succeeding a 16-year period of Republican leadership.

A central issue in the campaign is the implementation of recent GOP-backed state laws. These include requirements for voters to provide proof of citizenship during registration and the use of specific government-issued photo identification at the polls. Additionally, a ballot initiative seeks to enshrine these identification requirements into the Ohio Constitution.

Sprague, the current state treasurer, supports these measures as necessary to secure elections. Russo, a former state lawmaker, opposes the laws, arguing they are unnecessary responses to non-existent voter fraud and could disenfranchise voters.
