Ohio Senate race focuses on massive Pike County data center project
The development of a massive data center project in Pike County, Ohio, has become a central issue in the state’s highly competitive Senate race. The project involves a partnership between OpenAI, S. B. Energy, NVIDIA, and the U.S. Department of Energy to construct a multibillion-dollar site on federal land.
While the project is expected to create 35,000 jobs by 2032 and provide $120 million in community investment, it requires approximately 8 gigawatts of electricity. This energy demand is comparable to the output of eight large power plants.
In the race between Republican incumbent Jon Husted and Democrat former Senator Sherrod Brown, both candidates agree that technology companies should cover their own power costs to avoid increasing household utility bills. However, they disagree on the responsibility for existing projects and whether the state should continue providing incentives to attract more companies.
