Ohio State football updates leadership, defense, and recruiting

Ohio State football is preparing for the 2026 season with key developments in leadership, defensive depth, and recruiting. Junior middle linebacker Payton Pierce was named one of seven team captains, notably receiving more votes from his peers than any other player on the roster.

On the defensive line, Will Smith Jr. is expected to take on a significantly larger role following the departure of experienced interior linemen Kayden McDonald and Tywone Malone Jr. Smith, a former four-star recruit, enters his fourth year in Columbus looking to transition from a developmental player to a primary contributor.

In recruiting, the Buckeyes are maintaining momentum for future classes. Priority offensive line prospect John Paul Carrico, a 6-foot-8 Kentucky native ranked as the 22nd best offensive tackle in his class, is scheduled to visit the campus on November 14 during the Northwestern game.
