Ohio State University responds to federal education inquiry

Ohio State University officials have stated the institution is prepared to address a recent appeal from the Trump administration, though they have not confirmed if they will formally respond to the request. U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon issued a three-page letter to universities nationwide, asking campus leaders to publicly disclose their positions on various issues, including admissions transparency, campus protests, and college affordability.

The federal request also asks how institutions intend to “incentivize rigor in the age of AI” and how scientific research can support national economic and security needs. While the request is not a law and does not currently tie responses to federal funding, it overlaps with existing Ohio state regulations under Senate Bill 1, which governs free speech and foreign influence in public higher education.

The federal push has faced criticism from various sectors of the higher education community, including labor unions representing professors.
