Ohio teacher killed in crash involving driver who re-entered U.S. illegally

A 23-year-old Ohio teacher, Cameron Lyon, was killed and his fiancée, Abrielle Kerns, was seriously injured in a drunk-driving crash on US Route 33 in Fairfield County on September 6.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the driver, 33-year-old Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, was traveling eastbound in a GMC Terrain when the vehicle left the roadway and overcorrected, crossing into the westbound lanes and striking Lyon’s vehicle. The collision caused the GMC to catch fire. Lyon died shortly after being taken to Fairfield Medical Center, while Kerns remains in intensive care with serious injuries.

Uribe-Gonzalez has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, and operating a vehicle without a valid license. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that Uribe-Gonzalez is a Mexican national who had been deported in April 2020 after initially entering the U.S. illegally through Texas in January 2020. Federal officials stated he later re-entered the country illegally. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against him at the Fairfield County Jail.
