Ohio wrong-way crash kills 23-year-old; driver charged

Alvaro Uribe Gonzalez, 33, has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and operating a vehicle without a valid license following a fatal wrong-way crash in Fairfield County, Ohio.

On Sunday evening near the U.S. Route 22 interchange, Gonzalez was driving an eastbound 2016 GMC Terrain on U.S. Route 33. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Gonzalez traveled off the right side of the road and overcorrected, causing the SUV to overturn and enter the westbound lanes. The vehicle struck a westbound 2025 Chevrolet Trax and caught fire.

Cameron Lyon, 23, was driving the Chevrolet Trax and later died from his injuries. His fiancée was also in the vehicle and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Gonzalez was held without bond following the incident.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer for Gonzalez. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that the agency is seeking to ensure Gonzalez is not released from local custody so that he can be removed from the country.
