Ohrid Lake named best place in Europe by Time Out
Ohrid Lake has been named the best place in Europe for 2026 by Time Out magazine. The selection was based on personal recommendations from a network of editors and travelers rather than mere popularity.
Described as one of Europe’s oldest and deepest natural lakes, the destination spans the border between North Macedonia and Albania. The magazine highlights the Macedonian side, specifically the city of Ohrid, as a peaceful and more affordable alternative to Italy’s Lake Como. Key attractions mentioned include the city’s cobblestone streets, medieval churches—with a legend of 365 churches—and the panoramic views from the Saint John at Kaneo church.
The Albanian side is also noted for its wilder landscapes and quieter villages, such as Lin, which features ancient mosaic remains. Other top destinations in the Time Out rankings included Saturnia in Italy, the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, and the Norwegian fjords.
