Ohrid Swimming Marathon begins with 16 international athletes
The 39th Ohrid Swimming Marathon has commenced on Lake Ohrid, featuring 16 swimmers from eight different countries: Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Canada, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Argentina. The competitors are tackling the 25-kilometer ‘Klime Savin’ course, starting from Sveti Naum and finishing at the City Port in Ohrid.
The field includes 11 male and 5 female swimmers. The event carries a prize fund of $15,000. Ohrid Mayor Kiril Pecaov highlighted the marathon as a vital part of the city’s identity and a key driver for tourism, noting that the event places Ohrid on the global sporting map.
Organizers, including the Ohrid Municipality and the Swimming Federation of Macedonia, have announced plans to increase support and the prize fund for the upcoming 40th anniversary edition next year. The marathon is a central component of the ‘Ohrid Water Festival’, which promotes various water sports on the lake.
