Oia municipality expands domestic composting program, adds eight households

The municipal council of Oia in Galicia has welcomed eight new families to its domestic composting initiative, providing each participant with a free compost bin, specific training and technical support. The program, funded by the Xunta de Galicia and the EU Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (Next Generation EU), aims to reduce organic waste and produce high‑quality natural fertilizer.

General guidance on composting grass clippings notes that fresh cut grass is a "green" material that must be balanced with "brown" material such as dry leaves. If the clippings are fully dried they become brown material. Herbicide‑treated grass from residential lawns typically breaks down within days, while grass from farms or golf courses may retain chemicals for weeks or months and could affect the safety of the resulting compost.
