OIC Council of Foreign Ministers meets in Baghdad as Iraq assumes presidency

The 52nd Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers opened in Baghdad on October 17, 2026, under the theme ‘Dialogue and Solidarity: Two Fundamental Pillars for Promoting Peace and Sustainable Development.’ During the summit, Iraq officially assumed the OIC presidency from Turkey for a one-year term.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi introduced a major initiative aimed at integrating energy, railway, transport, and digital communication networks among Islamic nations. This proposal includes developing digital payment systems and commercial platforms to foster regional stability and economic prosperity.

The Palestinian cause remains the central agenda item. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan characterized Israel's expansionist policies as the primary security threat to the Middle East, calling for a unified Islamic response and a two-state solution. Similarly, representatives from Jordan and the Maldives advocated for the formal recognition of Palestinian statehood and increased humanitarian support for Gaza.

Other key discussions included regional security in Syria and Lebanon, maritime safety in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, and efforts to combat Islamophobia. The session is expected to conclude with the adoption of the Baghdad Declaration.
