OIELA alleges school sports scandal in Greece
The Greek Teachers' Federation (OIELA) has raised serious allegations regarding irregularities in school sports involving at least four private schools in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Patras. According to the federation, these institutions may be using “ghost students”—athletes who are enrolled but rarely or never attend classes—to manipulate school championships.
These alleged manipulations are reportedly intended to secure bonus points for students during the Panhellenic university entrance examinations. The federation claims these practices undermine meritocracy, equality, and transparency within the educational system. The investigation may extend beyond basketball to other sports.
Additionally, OIELA president Giorgos Christopoulos reported a separate complaint from parents alleging that certain members of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) requested payments in exchange for enrolling children in youth national teams. This practice is also linked to the pursuit of athletic distinctions used for university admissions.
