OIJ warns of 3,969 million colones budget hit from proposed IVA tax

The Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) has warned that a new legislative proposal from the Ministry of Finance could result in a budget reduction of 3,969 million colones. The proposal, presented to the Legislative Assembly, seeks to revise tax exemptions for several entities, including the OIJ, requiring them to pay the 13% Value Added Tax (IVA) on purchases starting in 2027.

Acting Director Michael Soto stated that the loss of this exemption, which has been in place since 2023, would complicate the institution's operations. He noted that the funds are critical for purchasing equipment, supplies, and spare parts necessary for fighting crime and maintaining citizen security.
