G7 agrees to release 100 million barrels of oil and diesel FAST-MOVING
G7 leaders have agreed to a coordinated release of up to 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil from strategic reserves over the next four months. This decision, announced by French President Emmanuel Macron following an emergency videoconference, aims to stabilize global energy markets and curb rising fuel prices driven by conflicts in the Middle East.
The release, coordinated through the International Energy Agency (IEA), is expected to begin immediately, with a significant portion of diesel reserves hitting the market within the first 20 days. To further support supply, G7 nations also agreed to coordinate refinery maintenance schedules to prevent simultaneous capacity reductions and encouraged members to increase refinery utilization rates.
The agreement comes amid diplomatic tension regarding fuel supplies. The United States had previously pressured European allies, specifically France and Germany, to tap into emergency reserves and had considered potential bans on US diesel exports. In response, the European Commission rejected such export bans, stating they would undermine trust in the US as a reliable partner. G7 members have formally committed to avoiding any export restrictions on energy products among themselves to ensure market stability.
