Oil prices surge amid Middle East tensions and attacks on Saudi infrastructure

Oil prices have surged, with Brent crude trading near $107 per barrel, driven by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Security concerns have intensified following attacks on tankers near the Strait of Hormuz and a drone strike targeting a Saudi Aramco administrative building in Dhahran, which caused a limited fire but no casualties. Additionally, projectile strikes in Riyadh have resulted in at least 13 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Iranian officials have reportedly adopted new tactics in the Strait of Hormuz to maintain high oil prices and influence US political outcomes. Meanwhile, OPEC has increased its global oil demand growth forecast for 2027, though it lowered its 2026 outlook. The IMF has warned that if Middle East tensions persist, oil prices could reach $130 per barrel by late 2026.

In a separate economic development, the IMF noted that while energy shocks pose risks, significant investments in artificial intelligence are helping sustain global economic growth at approximately 3 percent.
