UAE coast faces expanding oil spill from damaged tanker

An oil spill from a damaged tanker is spreading along the coast of the United Arab Emirates, prompting authorities to close several beaches in the northern emirates. Satellite imagery from the European Union’s Copernicus network shows the slick widening and approaching the shores of Umm Al Quwain, with dark layers of oil visible at sea and along the coastline.

While UAE authorities have not officially named the vessel, maritime experts identify the tanker as the Gem No. 2, a Panama-flagged ship owned by a Taiwanese company. The vessel was reportedly struck by an unidentified projectile approximately two weeks ago, causing a fire that was subsequently extinguished. The resulting oil slick is estimated to span roughly 90 kilometers.

The spill has led to the temporary closure of all beaches and coastal areas in Umm Al Quwain, Al Hamriyah Beach in Sharjah, and all beaches in Ras Al Khaimah. The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment is currently conducting an environmental assessment and containment efforts.

Environmental concerns are high due to the potential impact on marine habitats, including coral reefs, mangroves, and species such as dugongs, dolphins, and sea turtles. The incident occurs amid increased maritime security risks in the Gulf following the onset of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
