Caroline Bezengi oil spill spreads off Oman coast
The Suezmax tanker Caroline Bezengi, flagged to Cameroon and sanctioned by the UK, EU, Canada and Switzerland for carrying Russian crude, ran aground off Oman’s Dhofar coast near Qibliyah Island in the Hallaniyat archipelago. The vessel, which loaded more than 800,000 barrels of Russian oil at the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, reported a blast on 8 June while off Yemen’s Mukalla and later began leaking oil. Satellite imagery from late July shows a dark slick and lighter patches around the island, covering roughly 20 sq km of sea and reaching the shoreline.
Remote‑sensing specialist Wim Zwijnenburg of the Dutch peace group Pax said the hull appears breached and the ship may be listing, raising the risk that it could break up. The monsoon season, with strong winds and rough seas, could rapidly spread the crude. The International Maritime Organization is monitoring the situation, while the ship’s owner, Shanghai‑based Rentoor Shipmanagement, could not be reached for comment. Environmental experts warn that the spill threatens a protected marine area and could cause significant ecological damage if the vessel deteriorates further.
