Oil spills reported in Falcón's Golfete de Coro

Fishermen in the Golfete de Coro, located in Falcón state, have reported ongoing oil spills affecting the region throughout August. The hydrocarbon leak is situated on the submarine pipeline connecting Zulia to the Paraguaná Refining Complex, specifically near the Ocorote village in the Miranda municipality.

Local fishing communities, including residents of Punta Cardón, Tiguadare, and Mitare, report that the pipeline infrastructure has suffered severe damage since late 2019. They claim at least 80 oil and gas spills have occurred, causing irreversible environmental damage and threatening unique marine biodiversity. These incidents also directly impact artisanal fishing production and the livelihoods of local inhabitants.

Despite a two-year-old agreement between fishermen, government officials, and PDVSA to replace the most damaged sections of the line, residents claim the issue remains unresolved. While some aid such as health jornadas, food bags, and small monthly bonuses has been provided, critics argue that the repairs are merely temporary fixes on a 70-year-old system that requires total replacement.
