Earlier, on 1 August 2026, an unknown projectile struck a tanker approximately 11 nautical miles northeast of the Lima area on Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, damaging its engine room and causing a loss of control. No crew injuries or environmental damage were reported.

The incidents occur amid heightened diplomatic activity: Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations with Oman on a revised Strait of Hormuz shipping lane are nearing completion, while Iran stresses the waterway will not return to its pre‑war status. U.S. President Donald Trump announced a pause on planned military strikes against Iran. Maritime traffic through the strait has fallen by up to 77 % according to intelligence firm Kpler.
