Oise police officer faces indictment after fatal pursuit

A fatal accident in the Oise department has led to legal proceedings against a municipal police officer. The incident occurred after a vehicle refused to stop for a police check in Margny-lès-Compiègne, leading to a high-speed pursuit that ended in Bienville when the driver lost control and crashed into a field.

The driver, identified in some reports as Paul Devert, died at the scene, while a passenger sustained minor injuries. The Compiègne prosecutor, Caroline Gaziot, announced that the authorities will request the formal indictment of a municipal police officer on charges of road homicide. The officer's alcohol test was reported as negative.

The incident has sparked tension within the local traveler community. Protesters gathered at the Compiègne hospital morgue to oppose the autopsy of the deceased and demand transparency, citing concerns that the investigation might be suppressed. Law enforcement presence was increased at the site to manage the demonstrations.
