OJK oversees CIMB Niaga Sharia spin-off and banking consolidation plans

The Indonesian Financial Services Authority (OJK) is overseeing several structural developments within the national banking sector. PT Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk is currently adjusting its business processes following the principle approval to spin off its Sharia business unit. This process, which aims to establish PT Bank CIMB Niaga Syariah, is intended to create a more independent and competitive Sharia banking industry.

OJK Executive Head of Banking Supervision Dian Ediana Rae stated that the regulator is monitoring the operational readiness of the spin-off to ensure it does not negatively impact customer experience and that the resulting Sharia bank operates healthily and sustainably. The effective operational date will be determined once all preparations meet regulatory standards and prudential principles.

In a broader effort to strengthen the industry, OJK is also developing a policy framework for banking consolidation. This initiative targets KBMI I banks and digital banks to enhance capital strength, business scale, and competitiveness. The regulator is encouraging banks to evaluate their business performance and capital adequacy, suggesting consolidation as a viable option to navigate rapid digitalization and maintain financial stability.
