Indonesia capital market sees record investor growth amid economic risks
Indonesia's financial sector is experiencing significant shifts in both growth and challenges. The Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) reported a record addition of approximately 9.9 million investors in the first seven months of 2026, bringing the total to over 30.2 million. To support this growth, BEI is increasing transparency by adding investor type and affiliation status to shareholder data.
However, the Indonesian Financial Services Authority (OJK) and other experts have highlighted several risks. The Indonesian Emittent Association (AEI) warned that global geopolitical tensions, yen unwinding, and El Nino-driven food and energy price spikes could pressure the capital market. Additionally, the multifinance industry faces pressure from rising interest rates, as Bank Indonesia has implemented several rate hikes this year.
On the regulatory and social front, OJK is focusing on improving financial literacy, particularly for low-income groups, rural populations, and the youth. Recent surveys show gaps in understanding, such as 20 percent of the public confusing Bank Indonesia with the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS).
To bolster the economy, the government is pushing for increased MSME support. Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto proposed raising MSME credit targets to Rp 2,000 trillion and suggested a government-funded internship program to accelerate business development. Meanwhile, OJK is forming a cross-sector task force to improve MSME financing effectiveness.
