Indonesia settles 1997-1998 financial crisis debt
Indonesian Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara has announced the full repayment of the Rp640 trillion in debt instruments issued to manage the 1997-1998 financial crisis. This includes the finalization of BLBI-related debt in August 2026, funded by Bank Indonesia's surplus. While the debt to Bank Indonesia is settled, Nazara emphasized that the state retains the right to continue collecting outstanding obligations from BLBI obligors and debtors through the Directorate General of State Assets.
In a separate organizational move, the Ministry of Finance inaugurated 14 high-ranking officials to strengthen meritocracy and leadership within the ministry and the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK). Nazara clarified that these appointments complement previous leadership transitions and that prior appointments remain legally valid.
Additionally, the Directorate General of Customs and Excise reported the seizure of 30 containers of illegal goods, including rice, salt, and used clothing, valued at approximately Rp 27.3 billion. Nazara warned that such smuggling undermines Indonesia's food self-sufficiency goals and urged officials to implement more rigorous risk-based supervision to prevent illegal activities.
