Canadian winery owner petitions to remove interprovincial alcohol barriers
Ron Kubek, owner of Lightning Rock Winery in Summerland, B.C., has initiated Petition e-7258 to urge the federal government to remove interprovincial barriers on alcohol sales. The petition supports MP Dan Albas’s Bill C-262 and was presented to the House of Commons on September 25.
Kubek noted that the push for domestic market access is particularly urgent following new U.S. restrictions on many packaged Canadian wines, beers, and spirits, which have effectively closed an important market to Canadian producers. He argued that if Canada intends to help businesses diversify away from the United States, it must first open its own internal markets.
While nine provincial premiers signed an agreement in July regarding direct-to-consumer alcohol sales, Kubek stated that producers still face significant hurdles from provincial liquor board systems. The agreement allows provinces to maintain separate authorizations, reporting requirements, and various fees or taxes without creating legally enforceable rights for producers.
