Okanagan wildfires force mass evacuations in British Columbia

The human‑caused Bradley Creek wildfire, which ignited on July 31, has burned an estimated 2,603 ha and showed no significant growth on August 4, 2026. Four evacuation orders and five alerts have been issued for the fire, affecting more than 2,200 properties in the Spallumcheen, North Okanagan and Okanagan Indian Band areas. Wind gusts of up to 115 km/h have fanned the blaze, damaging homes and infrastructure.

The nearby Quilpituk Creek wildfire has expanded to about 565 ha. All evacuation orders and alerts remain in place, covering 2,223 properties under order and 425 under alert. Shelters have been set up at the Royal LePage Place arena and the Westbank First Nation gym. Westside Road and sections of Highway 97 remain closed.

BC Hydro reports extensive damage to its electrical system on the west side of Okanagan Lake, with roughly 150 power poles needing replacement and power outages still affecting around 1,700‑1,800 customers in Vernon and Spallumcheen. Across the province, more than 5,000 people have been forced from their homes as BC battles a total of 120 active wildfires.
